4/22/94
Lorain Ohio to Fairport Harbor. 44 miles.
Started at 0800 with SW winds 10-15 Knots, 2-3 foot waves, air temp about 65 deg. . We were making 5 knots under 170 and full main. Wind was settling all morning and by 1300 we were motoring. We saw Avalon head inshore and pick up a sea breeze. We should have followed them. By 1400 the lake was glassy smooth. We arrived at Fairport at 1830. We motored for about 6 hours and consumed about 3 1/2 gallons of fuel.

4/30/94
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Went out for about 1 hour. Wind 25+. We made 5 knots under just a main with 1 reef. Waves 4-6 foot. The motor was coming out of the water a lot in the entrance chop.

5/7/94
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Boarded by Coastguard because one of our ID letters fell off. They gave us a warning and said the boat was in very good shape.

Fairport, OH to Ashtabula OH. 22 miles.
Left Fairport at 0800. Wind was from the south at 15 - 20 knots, waves were well formed rollers 3-5 feet from the west, air temp 70 deg. We were reaching with the 130 and full main easily making hull speed. The waves were perfect for surfing and we were frequently hitting 7 knots and a few times hit 7.5. We were in Ashtabula by 1100. Anchored behind wall for a couple of hours waiting for Rythm to arrive from Erie, PA. They never showed so we headed up the river to the Ashtabula Yacht Club for the night.

6/19/94
Ashtabula, OH to Fairport, OH. 22 miles.
We were on the lake by 0600 making 4.5 knots close hauled in 3-4 foot waves. We were only able to point 30 degrees from our intended coarse to Fairport and had to beat. We stayed within about 3 miles of shore where the waves were a bit more manageable. At about 0830 a small tear developed in the mainsail at the 2nd batten pocket. We dropped the main and made a temporary repair with some sail tape and thread. This took about 25 minutes and we raised the main again. We made Fairport at 1300.

10/8/94
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind 23-27. Waves 3-5 outside wall. With full main and working jib boat was perfectly balanced. Just a bit of weatherhelm. Just needed fingertips on tiller. Sailed west to see houses falling into lake in Painsville, then back to Fairport.

10/16/94
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind SE, 8-12 knots, waves 1-2 feet.
Full main and 170. Made 5-6 knots most of the time.

6/3/95
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
New bottom and new main help light air performance a lot. We are able to sail now when we would have needed the motor last year. 3-5 knots of wind and we can make better then 2.5 knots with the 170.

Flew spinnaker for first time. We were making 3.5 knots in 4-6 knots of wind. Went a long way west and had to beat back with the 170 and the iron jenny.

9/2/95
Fairport, OH to Rondeau, ON. 40 miles
With Pat & Stacy
Race to Rondeau (start based on PHRF). We were 1st start at 0700 (215 PHRF). Committee boat was late to station and did not set up until 0705 and then he was behind the wall instead of at race mark C. Freespirit (Newport 27-2nd start) said we had to come back to start-we said we were on time and were not coming back and proceeded on coarse leaving C mark at 0710 on advise of Avalon (fleet captain). We were making 4.5 knots with 170 on a close reach 20 deg off coarse to Rondeau. By 1200 wind had died. Closet boat was over 3 miles behind us. Race was canceled and everyone motored the rest of the way (apr. 20 miles). We arrived in Rondeau at 1830. Consumed 4 gallons of fuel. Freespirit said they would have protested our start. We said we didn't care, we were on time at the designated start location and the committee boat should have been there or notified the fleet captain of the change in start ahead of time. The committee boat wasn't even at the mouth of the river at 0700.

9/3/95
Rondeau, ON to Fairport, OH. 40 Miles
Left a day ahead of the rest of the race fleet. Departed Rondeau at 1200. Wind west 23-28 knots waves 5-7 feet. We were broad reaching under the 130 and full main with the waves on the stbd 1/4. We were averaged 6.5 knots for the entire passage and 6.7 for 1.25 hours. We were routinely surfing and hitting 7 knots. In the middle of the lake the waves were 6-8 feet with the occasional 9+ footer. Waves were licking the stern pulpit. The boat performed wonderfully. We were just slightly over powered with the 130 but not enough to go out and change it. We arrived in Fairport at 1810 after a very fast passage-6:24.

5/9/96
LAUNCH DAY 1996

Launched boat at 1330 and stepped mast. Put boat in slip at dock D26.

5/18/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
First sail of 1996.
W-SW winds 15-25 knots, fairly puffy, Waves 1-2' (behind wall).
Mainsail.
Went out at about 2000. Raised mainsail in basin and shut motor off half way down the river. Sailed behind the wall for 40 minutes under just the main. We made 4 to 5 knots easily, almost Hit 6 once. Boat handled well and rig pre-tuning seemed very good. Sailed back almost all the way up the river to the turning basin.

5/20/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
W-SW winds 10-20 knots, puffs to 25, Waves 1-2' (behind wall).
Flew new storm jib for first time. It needs a sheeting point further forward-about 2 feet forward of the shrouds. Went back and forth a bit behind the wall. Made about 4.5 knots and up to 6 a few times. Sailed up the river almost to the overhead wires.

6/1/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E at 12-16 knots 1-3' waves.
Flew 130 and full main. Made hull speed easily. We were able to make 5 knots wing in wing dead down wind. 6.5 knots close reaching.

7/1/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.

No wind flat lake. Cleaned bottom.

7/4/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind W, NW at 12-16 knots 1-3' waves. Settling through evening. Temp 60-70, visibility excellent (behind cold front that passed on 7/3).
Full Main and 130.
Left dock at 1930 and sailed west about 3.5 miles to watch fireworks. Saw about 8 different displays including Edgewater, Avon Lake?, Lorain?, Euclid, Willoghby, Mentor, Ashtabula?. Headed back at about 2200. Wind was down to less then 4 knots. Motored about half way back. Were back at the dock at about 2330.

7/6/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind ? at 0-0 knots 1' waves.
No wind. Motor ran fine. 6.25 knots @ full throttle. Went out 1 mile from light and turned back.

7/7/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.

Wind W, NW at 8-12 knots 1-3' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility good.
Full Main, Spinnaker and 130. Temp 75-80, visibility good.
Sailed out river from turning basin with full main and spinnaker. Went out about 3 miles then headed back with 130. Boat points 5-10 degrees higher with new sheeting position for smaller headsails - thanks to new track. Knotmeter was off line but GPS put speed at about 5-5.5.
7/9/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind N at 8-12 knots 1-3' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility good.
Full Main and WJ.
Sailed behind wall 1 length then beat our way out the entrance. Tacked back and forth 4 times outside then headed in. We made 3.5-5.5 knots and tacked through 110 degrees in 1-3' chop. The WJ flew well with the car 3 positions aft of the middle stanchion.

7/11/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.

Wind E-NE at 15-18 knots 2-4' waves, Temp 70-75, visibility very good 25+ miles.
Full Main and 130.
The entrance had 6 footers in it. Boat was slightly overpowered with the 130 but we weren't burying the rail. Heel was 15-25 deg. Sailed out entrance and north about 2 miles then east to the east end of the wall and back to the river down wind behind the wall. Tacked back once behind the wall. The second time down wind we were beating a 32 footer (Oday?) nicely (they had a working jib up?). They were on a higher coarse then us. We gained 10 boat lengths in about 1 mile.

7/14/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E-NE at 5-10 knots <2' waves.
Full main and 170. Added 3 gallons of fuel.
Left dock at 0940. Sailed out to GRSC race mark B and watched race fleet round mark. Sailed north and south on close reach to close hauled courses for a couple of hours. Wind speed varied from 5 to 10 knots. Boat speed also varied from 3.5 to 6 knots. Wind was building towards the end and 170 was at it's upper limit. We were slightly overpowered on the way back but weren't quite burying the rail. Pulled out the lift ring out of the stbd genoa car lock pin with the car too far forward for a close hauled course. Fixed it at the dock in 2 minutes.

7/16/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind SE at 5-10 knots <2' waves.
Full main and 130.
Left dock at 1845. Sails up in river. Went out entrance and sailed out past GRSC race mark C. Made 3 passes back and forth past entrance. The last tack was out to B mark. Made 3.5-5.5 knots. Making 4 knots in <2' waves we tacked through 100 degrees on compass (165-175). Deviation card from summer '94 corrects this to 90 deg.

7/20/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind W-NW at 12-16 knots 2-4' waves, Temp 70-75, visibility excellent.
Full Main and 130.
Sailed north close hauled for about 1.5 miles, then west towards Eastlake about 1 mile close hauled (5-6 knots), then east to east end of break wall broad reaching (5-6 knots with occasional surfs to 6.5 knots), then close reaching back behind wall to river entrance. Had to wait for freighter to exit river. Boat was slightly overpowered when close hauled. Good power off the wind. Tacked through about 115 (uncorrected for deviation) in the chop.

7/23/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind W-NW at 5-10 knots 1-3' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility excellent.
Full Main and 130.
Left the dock at 1850. Sails up at end of river. Sailed out entrance on close reach @4-5 knots and headed up a bit to chase Doug M. on his Seaward 23 cat rig. He was about 3/4 miles out, we were making 5.5 knots. We caught him in about 20 minutes and passed him at about 4.5 knots. He was probably making 3.5 knots or so. We continued out another 1/2 mile or so and tacked back. Went on a broad to beam reach and sailed to the east end of the breakwall. We then tacked back behind the wall and were able to make the river entrance. Out in the 1-3 foot waves we tacked through about 105 degrees in 7-10 knots of wind (making 4.5-5.5 knots). Behind the wall in 1 foot waves and 4-7 knots (enough to make 2.5-3 knots) we tacked through 90 degrees. We ere signaling Paul and Kathy in their condo with a signal mirror. They flashed back with something. Back at the dock at 2115. New deviation wheel works well. Needs some refinements.

7/26/96
Fairport, OH to Ashtabula OH. 22 miles.
West wind, 10-15 knots, waves 3-5. Temp 70-75, Visibility excellent-20 miles.
Full main and spinnaker.
Left the dock at 1400 with Paul. Motored out entrance with main and rigged spinnaker. We sailed between dead down and 160 degrees with the sheet and guy led through blocks amidships. The main was rigged with a preventer. We started out in 8-12 knots of wind making 5.5-6.5. The wind and waves built and we were routinely surfing at better then 7 knots and on several occasions rode surfs to 8.5+. At about 1630 the wind picked up sharply from a thunder storm cell to the west of us and we took the spinnaker down. As the wind picked up we were surfing to 7+ knots with just the main. We set up a reefing line but before we needed it the wind settled back down. With less wind the boat rolled quite a bit and when our sustained speed dropped to 4 knots we put the spinnaker back up and were surfing again to 7.5 on the 4-5 foot waves. The spinnaker stabilized the boat allot and the ride was much more comfortable. A C&C 27 (older style) was about 4 miles ahead of us when we left Fairport. We got in to the Ashtabula harbor just ahead of him. He was flying a jib, no spinnaker. He spent allot of time wing&wing but was rolling allot and had to take a higher coarse (about 140 degrees). We were sailing dead down. We dropped the spinnaker just outside the wall and jibed into the harbor under main. We made the 1830 bridge. The boat handled very well surfing dead down with the spinnaker and was much more stable then it would have been with a jib.

Ashtabula, OH to Fairport, OH. 22 miles.
Wind W-NW 10-15 diminishing to 00. Waves 1-3 feet, temp 70-75, visibility excellent-20 miles.
Full main, 130, 170, spinnaker.
Left with the 1300 bridge. Set the main in the river and raised the 130 inside the wall. We headed out about 1/2 mile before tacking onto a close reach coarse to Fairport. We made 5-6 knots in mildly puffy air. The wind settled over the next 90 minutes and we dropped to 3-4 knots. We switched to the 170 and were back up to 5 knots. This petered out after about 45 minutes and speed dropped to 2 knots. The wind had clocked around to a beam reach and we switched to the spinnaker. We made 2-3 knots with the spinnaker for about 5 to 10 minutes and the wind completely died. We started motoring about 12 miles out from Fairport at 4.5 knots. About 4 miles out we throttled up to about 5.5 knots. We headed in the east entrance to the harbor and were in the river at about 1845 and on the dock at 1915.

Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind W at 10-12 knots 1-4' waves, Temp 70-75, visibility excellent.
170, no main.
Left the dock at 1900 and set the 170 genoa by itself in the river. We shut the motor down about 1/2 way down the river and sailed out the entrance. We made 4.5 -5 knots with just the 170 on a close reach. There was weather helm and the balance was a little different. The rudder response was a little slower then with the main and jib. Dead down the best speed was 3 knots with a fair bit of rolling. A pole would have helped. Behind the wall in flat water the boat tacked through 100 degrees with just the jib. Speed hard on the wind was 4.5 to 5.5 knots in the flat water with 10 to 12 knots of wind. We sailed up the river just making it through the lulls at 1/2 knot. There was a bit more wind at the turning basin and we sailed into the dock. Wind at the dock and in the basin was about 5 knots and we were close reaching in the channel. We came into the channel at about 2 knots and dropped the 170 2 docks out then coasted into the slip. We came in a bit fast but under control. We were going about 1.5 knots when we started our turn into the slip and didn't scrub enough speed in the turn.

8/2/96
Added 4 3/4 gallons of fuel.

8/13/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NW at 5-7 knots 1-3' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility excellent.
Full main, 170.
Took Christopher Duer along. Left the dock at 1930 and motored out the entrance with the main. raised the 170 as the wind filled in and close reached to the north for about 2 miles then tacked back towards the light house. We were typically making 3.5-4 knots.

8/19/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E-NE at 5-7 knots <2' waves, Temp 80-85, visibility good.
Full main, 170.
Took Jonathan Duer along. Left the dock at 1915 and motored out the entrance with the main. raised the 170 and close reached to the north for about 1.5 miles at about 4 knots. We tacked back towards the entrance as the wind died and bobbed along at 1 knot for about 20 minutes before motoring back in.

8/26/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E-SE at 5-7 knots <2' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility very good.
Full main, 170, Spinnaker.
Left the dock at about 1900. Put Main and 170 up in river and close reached out the entrance at 3-4 knots. Started to head for D mark to sail the moonlight race coarse (D to H to W to the river entrance) but it was almost dead down and we had no speed (<2 knots). We turned north onto a close reach to C mark then tacked towards W mark to do an abbreviated Moonlight coarse. We experimented a bit with pinching vs falling of a few degrees for speed and how that affected VMG. Seems like 10 degrees increases VMG by about 2-4% at 3.5-4 knots boat speed. After rounding W and heading west towards the river we set the spinnaker. That was good for 3.5 knots vs 2.5-3 with the 170 on a bit more then a beam reach. We dropped the spinnaker at the west end of the basin and headed up the river with the motor. The main got hung up on the topping lift and would not come down until I disconnected the topping lift at the end of the boom. I think it got hooked under the shackle on the main halyard.

8/31/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NE at 5-7 knots <2' waves, Temp 75-80, visibility good.
Full main, 170, Spinnaker.
Left the dock at 0840 and motored out to S mark in flat water with no wind. At full throttle we made 5.7 knots. Cleaned the bottom while drifting near S mark. There was about 1/8" to 1/4" of slime that came off easily with a brush. The bottom paint (VC Offshore) did not come off at all. There was more slime on the port quarter - it gets sun all afternoon. I can attach the suction cup handle as far as I can reach with my head above water then reach the bottom of the keel when I go under. The whole cleaning job took about 90 minutes. With a clean bottom we were able to make 6.4 knots at full throttle in flat water. At about 1100 the wind started to fill in and we put up the main and the spinnaker. We were able to carry the spinnaker to about 60 degrees apparent and made 3.5 -4.5 knots. We switched to the 170 and headed back towards the harbor and were lifted right to it making hull speed most of the way as the wind filled in more. We sailed up the river on a reach, dropped the main before the basin and sailed into the dock dropping the 170 about 4 slips away. The wind slowed us quickly as we approached our slip and we had to skull a bit to get in.

9/1/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NE at 5-10, waves <2', Temp 75-80, visibility good, hazy.
Full main, 130.
With Laura and Jim Clark and their 2 boys Evan and Jack.
Put up main in river and 130 just out of mouth. We sailed east behind the wall at 5-6 knots close hauled. We went east until we were on the lay line for W mark at the east end of the wall. We went out on a broad reach back to the west and jibe to come in the main entrance.

Headed out the main entrance and close reached out to the north about 1.5 miles through the waves making 5-6 knots. Tacked and headed toward the east entrance to the harbor and close reached to close hauled at 6-7 knots going with the waves. On several occasions we hit 7.5 knots riding the waves. We were consistently over 6.25 knots. We came off the wind as we rounded W mark at the east end of the wall and tried to go wing in wing but the waves made that unmanageable. We went downwind on a very broad reach (apr. 150-160 deg) at 3.5-5 knots.

Put sails up in river and close reached out the main entrance. We headed down wind (apr 150 apparent) and jibed to go to D mark to run the Moonlight Race course. The course is from D to H to W with the finish line between the green light at the river mouth and the green light on the east end of the harbor entrance. We practiced a start at D and sailed on a reach from D to H at 5-6 knots (apr 15 min.) then tacked around H and got on course for W. The course was a close reach and we sailed at 5.5-6.25 knots (apr. 35 min.). We fell off around W and went downwind at about 150 deg off then wing in wing (apr 3-3.5 knots) towards the coastguard station with the main on a preventer to port. We then jibed the jib and headed up on a broad reach (apr 4.5 knots) for the finish crossing the line about 2/3 of the way out from the river end. Total time was about 1:20. We jibed and sailed back up the river putting the sails down just before the basin.

Moonlight Race
Wind SE at 3-6 knots, waves <2' temp 60-70 visibility good.
Full main, 170.
Left the dock at 1800. Start was scheduled at 1935. There was no wind on the lake at 1830 and we motored to D mark. A little wind filled in and we sailed north a bit then back to the start at about 2 knots. Before the first flag went up the start was changed to 1940. At 1935 we passed the pin heading away from the mark and tacked back 2:30 before the start. We lost time in the tack and made less speed on the way back and were a minute late for the start in the back half of the pack. We drove over Midnight's Dream (Hunter 34) and fell in behind Windward. We were 130 deg off the wind for the 1st leg from D to H. Rounded H ahead of 3 boats and beat to W (3.22 miles). Rounded W ahead of 3 boats and finished at 20:10:55 with a 213 rating. 1,2,3 were Tachyon (Seidleman 25, 227 @ 9:56:??), Simaril (Pearson 30, 180 @ 9:57:??) and Free Spirit (Newport 27 214 @ 10:09:??). We were 4th over the line. Our finish was 4th in class and 8/13 overall in JAM. Came back to the dock in the dark, the new docking light works great.

Left dock at 1810. Raised main in river, jib in harbor just out of river. "Raced" Windshadow from main harbor entrance and out to S mark, then to C and back to the harbor entrance. Made 4-5 knots up-wind, 2-3 dead down wing-in-wing. Managed to stay ahead of windshadow in the light air. New tell tails on 170 work very well.

Wind W at 10-18 knots, waves 2'-4', Temp 60-65, visibility excellent.
Full main, WJ.
Went out with Louise's parents and sailed down and back behind the break wall. We were making 4.5 -6 knots. The wind was very puffy. We were knocked over to about 30-35 degrees several times in the puffs. You need to turn the boat faster in the tacks with the small head sail.

9/30/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E-SE at 5-10 knots, waves <2', Temp 60-65, visibility excellent.
Full main, 170, Spin.
Added 4 gallons of fuel.
Sailed out the entrance with the 170 and headed upwind to reach back with the spinnaker to the harbor entrance. Made about 4 knots with the 170. With just the main we were making about .5 - 1 knots and didn't have enough headway to tack. We slowly jibed and raised the spinnaker and were soon reaching at 3.5 knots. We were able to sail at about 75-80 deg off the apparent wind. We jibed once but were making slow progress back to the harbor and dropped the spinnaker. We raised the 170 again and were making 4-5 knots on the wind and beat back to the entrance. We had to duck the dredging tug on the way in. We should fly the radar reflector at night.

10/1/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind S at 7-12 knots, waves <2', Temp 60-65, visibility excellent.
Full main, 130.
Left the dock at 1730. Sailed out the harbor entrance wing & wing then jibed the main and proceeded east on a stbd tack. We were about 8 boat lengths behind and to leeward of Eagle (Catalina 30) and slipped under them and pulled away easily. We probably had half a knot on them. We sailed about 1.5 miles east of the east end of the breakwall then jibed and headed back. We picked up with Windshadow as they came out of the east end and took some pictures of them with the sunset behind them. We went about 1 mile west of the main entrance then turned back and headed in. We were back at the dock at 2020.

10/5/96

Full main, 170.
Left the dock at 1530 and sailed north about 1 mile then turned north west and sailed to A mark. Dropped sails and drifted while I went in the water to scrub the bottom. The water temperature was 64.2 and I was very comfortable in my 1/4" wet suit. There was a moderate slime buildup on the bottom. I cleaned the waterline and as much as I could reach without going under water. We hoisted the main and sailed at 1.5 - 2 knots. Raised the 170 and speed picked up to 4.5. We sailed back to the harbor entrance. We had to beat making one long tack.

Full main, 170.
Left the dock at 1730. Sailed out the river wing & wing then jibed the jib and proceeded west on a port tack making 5.5 - 6.5 knots close reaching. Sailed on a course of 270 for about 50 minutes and turned back towards the lighthouse. We were on a close to beam reach on the way back in and ducked the freighter Wolverine as it went in the harbor entrance. We went past the entrance and tacked to head in. Inside the wall we tacked again and dropped the jib then motored up the river passing Wolverine who was proceeding up river at about 2 knots. We powered up to 6 knots to pass though the wash from the bow thrusters which tossed us about a little bit.

Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E at <4 knots, waves 2-3', Temp 60-65, visibility fair.
Full main, 170.
We motored out about 1 mile and raised the sails but they would not fill and the waves were rolling us allot. We motored further out and tried again and found enough wind to make 1.5 knots. We jibed back towards the harbor entrance and made 1.5 -2.25 knots. We had to keep on a close reach or the waves rolled us too much and we could not get enough air in the sails to keep them full. We managed to sail most of the way back to the harbor entrance then motored back in dropping the sails on the way.

10/14/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind N at 10-15 knots, waves 2-3', Temp 60-65, visibility excellent.

Beat our way out the main entrance and headed west a bit to catch the sunset. We tacked back and headed east for the far end of the wall but decided to turn around and follow Journey (Hunter 37.5) back to the west. About 1 mile to the west of the entrance they jibed and passed close to us heading east. We tacked behind them and followed. We were catching up with them on a close reach making 5.5-6.5 knots. They fell off to make the entrance and we followed. They pulled away from us on a very broad reach to dead down course. We went back through the entrance wing-in-wing making 4.5 knots. The freighter Buffalo was maneuvering in the river so we sailed east and back once behind the breakwall. Once in the river we waited to see what the freighter was doing and passed them as they were setting mooring cables to the west side of the river.

With Kathy Mathews. Motored out the main entrance and had no wind. Dropped the 170 and motored at full throttle to the east end of the breakwall making 6 knots. Came around W and made 6.5 knots at full throttle. Wind filled in a bit and we hoisted the 170 and shut down the motor. We made 4 knots under sail on a close reach to the river mouth then headed in.. We passed through a laser beam that the dredger was using for something while working at the harbor entrance.

Went out past D mark and turned back to the east. we close reached at 3.5 - 4.5 knots to the east end of the break wall and tacked back to the west. we close reached back to the river at 4 to 5 knots. Headed east on a close reach at 4 knots for about 1 mile past the harbor entrance then tacked onto port to test the new adjustable genoa car lead. We sailed on port past the main harbor entrance and off to the west about 1 mile. We then tacked and sailed on a close reach to close hauled course to the east end of the wall and cam back to the river entrance behind the wall. We passed through the dredgers laser beam again as we aproached the river entrance.

Motored out the main entrance with the main up passed the dredge and raised the jib. We tacked onto a parallel course to Avalon heading west. We went about 1 mile west of the entrance on a reach making 2.5-3.5 knots. we came about and headed to the west entrance on a close reach at about 4-4.5 knots. We had to beat to the east end (1 tack) and sailed on a reach back to the river entrance as a freighter came out of the river. The freighter announced they were going to turn around in the turning basin and depart about 45 min. before they came out the entrance. The new adjustable genoa cars work well, the control lines might be better inboard.

10/26/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind N-NE at 8-11 knots, waves <2', Temp 60-65, visibility good.
Full main, 170, spinnaker.
Got a pumpout before going sailing. Sailed out the main entrance and followed Whitehawk around a bit then headed north on a very close reach (40deg apparent) for about 3 miles. We were making 4.5-5 knots. We then rigged the spinnaker. The halyard was twisted at the top an I could not fully hoist the spinnaker with it filled. We fell off until the main blanketed the spinnaker and I was then able to fully hoist it. We headed back to the harbor entrance on a close reach (as high as we could go with the spin) with the pole all the way forward making 5.5 knots at about 50 deg apparent. We were heeled about 20 deg. Wind conditions were very steady. We headed high of the entrance so we could fall off and try the spinnaker dead down wind. At 150 deg apparent to dead down we made 4 knots. With the 170 we made 2 knots earlier in the same wind and wave conditions. As we were going through the entrance Avalon (Rule #1) drove over us and we momentarily luffed. As we approached the river entrance we dropped the spinnaker on the foredeck in a luff and motored up the river.

10/27/96
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind S-SE at 15-20 knots, waves <2', Temp 60-65, visibility good.
Full main, WJ.
Sailed out the main entrance on a beam reach then hardened up to a close reach making 5.5-6 knots with 15-20 deg of heel. We headed out about 3/4 mile then jibed and headed to the east end of the breakwall. Behind the wall the wind was lighter and we made 3.5-4.5 knots. We were able to make the river entrance with one tack. We sailed up the river and when we got as far as the salt shaker we had to start beating. We made 6 tacks to get to the turning basin, dropped the mainsail and sailed into the dock with the jib. We dropped the jib 4 slips away from ours and coasted in.

11/7/96 HAULOUT DAY 1996
