On the hard, frozen in.

5/18/00
LAUNCH DAY 2000
Launched boat at 1230
Motored over to D dock and put the boat in Jack & Sue's slip (d-26?) because they are on the guest dock and Jason & Laura's boat is in our slip. Forgot to bring the tiller but was able to steer with the outboard. A little vague at slow speeds, you need to give quick blasts of thrust to turn the boat.

5/21/00
Added 5.5 gallons of fuel. Moved boat to regular slip - D18.

5/26/00
Motored over to mast crane and stepped mast then motored back to slip.

5/27/00
Motored out to turning basin and back to test depth sounder. Seemed to work OK but I want to check it with a lead line.

1830-1940
Set main right after turning basin and motor sailed down the river at 3-4 knots. Once in the harbor we headed NE on a broad reach then NW on a close reach to the north side. We jibed and headed off to the east on a broad run (150 apparent) making 2.5-3 knots. Near the condos we jibed and headed towards the east end of the breakwall. We heard some thunder to the south and decided to head back. We came up to close hauled heading north making lees than 2 knots. I raised the working jib and speed came up to 3.5/ We tacked and headed towards the beach at 4-4.5 knots. We saw some lightning, started the motor, and came into the wind to drop the headsail. We motored at 5.8 knots to the river entrance dropping the main on the way. I took off the jib and covered the main on the way up the river. It was pretty gusty coming into the slip but we didn't have any trouble.

1830-2140
Set main and jib in river and shut off motor in harbor halfway to main entrance. We sailed out the main entrance on a reach then came up to a close reach to the NW at about 2.5 knots. We were ahead of Windshadow, the Stanley's P26OD and Silent Passage (O'Day 23). We were gaining on all of them. I did a couple of circles to get back to the Stanley's to shoot some photos. Got a few of them and Silent Passage. The wind was light, varying in intensity but fairly steady in direction. We came up to close hauled and made less then 2 knots. I cracked off about 10 degrees and we made 2.2-2.5. About 1.5 miles out we tacked and headed back for the light making about 2 knots most of the way. Windshadow came along and slowly passed us with their 150. I had the WJ on a pennant at 18". I raised it to 30" and we seemed to be able to point higher by 5-10 degrees. We picked up speed to 2.5-2.8 knots. We sailed east past the entrance and tacked towards it making about 2.2 knots close hauled to close reaching. After a few minutes I started the motor and dropped the sails. For a lot of the ride I used the self steering unit. It worked pretty well but there was little to no weatherhelm in the light air.

1830-2200
As we were coming out of the river the freighter Richard Reiss was turning in the basin with it's stern about 100' off the end of the channel. We turned up the river to wait for them to come around and stop there propeller which was kicking up a lot of turbulence. We waited for them to finish turning. A medium large power (32ft) boat went through before they were done and got twisted about in the eddy. Once the stern was on the other side of the river they stopped their propeller and we headed through. There were still a lot of eddies but it was very manageable, out keel probably helped compared to a power boat. As we passed the ship signaled it was backing and they announced on the radio that they were heading out to the lake. After clearing the basin I raised the main. Once in the harbor we turned east and I raised the jib. We were running at about 140 apparent and making 3.5-4.5 knots. I turned north and went wing-in-wing for a while then jibed the headsail and headed north following the Stanley's. We were on a pretty deep reach (130 apparent?) making 3-4 knots. I turned to the NE and went wing-in-wing again making 5-5.5 knots without too much rolling. At D mark I tuned to the NNW on a beam to close reach making 5-5.5 knots. The Stanley's had jibed and were heading our way now and we passed them to starboard. We continued out another mile or so then tacked and headed beck to the S on a close reach. Fairly close in we crossed the Stanley's again and tacked to a parallel course on a close reach. We talked with them a bit about sail trim and came up on the wind to see how they would point. We had better trim and were faster in the puffs. We fell off and moved to their starboard side and gave them some tips on trim and car position for their headsail. We trimmed up and pulled away and sailed west of the main entrance, tacked and headed in. We tacked a bit early or we were headed a bit and had to throw in another tack to make the entrance. As we came in the entrance I started the motor. Inside I hove to with the motor running in neutral and got the boat ready for docking. I dropped the main, headed towards the river and dropped the jib. We motored up the river.

1830-2045
We raised the main in the river and motored out to the harbor. The knotmeter was not functioning so I tried backing to see if that would clear it. It didn't. We motored out the main entrance and off to the NE and raised the 130 on a 24" pennant. I shut the motor off and we made 3.5-4 knots close reaching. I set the self steering and went forward to shorten the pennant to 12". This seemed to provide better sheeting angles with the cars back at the coaming. Out near D mark we tacked and made for the entrance on a beam reach. The wind lightened and we were making very slow progress. After about 20 minutes it filled again and we were reaching at 2.5-3 knots. The wind clocked from NNW to NE and the entrance was dead down wind. We went wing-in-wing but there was very little wind. After a bit it filled in some more and we moved at about 1.5 knots wing-in-wing. L jibed the main and headed up to a beam reach crossing the entrance channel making 3.5 knots. I jibed and headed in on a close reach at 4.5 knots. We started the motor at the main entrance and motorsailed up the river. We dropped the sails in the lee of the piles on the sand in the river.

1900-2045
The knotmeter was working again. Perhaps something was jamming up the impeller on 6/17 and it freed itself. Raised the main as we motored down the river, motored out the main entrance at 6 knots and out a few hundred yards. Then we backed the motor down, turned to the east and raised the headsail. We shut the motor down and were making about 3 knots on a close reach. The 1938 Alden "Viking" was coming out behind us. They also turned east and we did a small 360 to get closer for some photos. I got a few good ones with the light house as we reached across their path. I came up on the wind to work back above them. We slowly moved to windward of them and pulled ahead making 2.5 - 3 knots. About 1/4 mile past the east end of the breakwall we tacked and headed to the WNW on a beam reach. We passed a bit closer to Viking and took a couple more photos. We were pretty far off the wind now making about 1.5 knots. We came up to a close reach making about 3 knots. With the tiller on the self steering rig I went up on the cabin top at the mast. I could make small course corrections by moving to one side or the other. Moving to the low side made the boat head up. We turned to the SW jibed the headsail and went wing-in-wing for a bit making less then 1 knot. We jibed the main and close reached back to the main entrance. A couple hundred yards out we started the motor and dropped the headsail. We dropped the main in the river on the way to the dock. This was the first sail with the cam cleats I added to handle the jib sheets after the winches. They worked great and made sheeting the headsail a lot faster.

1830-2045
With Dave Proctor and his friend Pamela. We set the main in the turning basin and shut the motor down in the river. We went dead down wind in the river at about 3 knots. In the harbor we turned to the east on a close reach making about 3-3.5 knots. We raised the jib and made 5-5.5. I set the self steering. The wind was a bit puffy. At the east end we fell off, jibed the main and sailed wing-in-wing at about 3.5 knots. After a bit we turned and jibed the headsail and headed to the west on a close reach at 5.5-6 knots. We sailed past the main entrance and west another 1/2 mile then tacked and close reached back. At the entrance I started the motor, we tuned into the entrance and up wind and I dropped the headsail. As we motored across the harbor I dropped the main and we motored up the river.

1745-2020
Raised the main in the basin, shut the motor down and sailed down the river. We were running making 2-5 knots in the fluky wind behind the piles and freighter. Once out of the river we jibed and headed off to the east past Avalon who was setting up to be the race committee for the Wed. night race. We jibed a few times and tacked and went back and forth behind the wall making 4-5.5 knots with just the main. We watching the racers prepare for their starts and tried to stay out of the way. The inshore side of the harbor was more shadowed from the wind. As we were coming back to the west we saw Brigadier (Evelyn 32) aground on the sand bar on the north side of the harbor. I dropped the main and motored over to them to see if I could pull them off. It was pretty windy which made maneuvering problematic. TO slow and you loose steerage, too fast and you cant get lines set. After 2 attempts they passed us a line. Then they lost the end of that and we passed it back to them. Once hooked up we started pulling but couldn't manage to steer to the south away from the sand bar. We added another length of line and were able then to steer south. They all moved to the low side to help heel the boat but the main was still up and working against them. The dropped the main but seemed pretty well dug in. We made little progress and could not pull them off with our motor. I took the anchor rode, tied it to their tow line and took it out and dropped it. The anchor line was 150', and the tow line was about 80. They were able to pull themselves off by winching on the anchor line. After they were free we helped re-set the race pin mark for Avalon and headed in with Brigadier. We motored over to Harbor 220 and got our anchor and line from Brigadier and then motored back to our slip.

1700-2245
With Dave Michelson. We set the main as we neared the end of the river and the 130 in the harbor. We headed off to the east at about 4 knots then tacked and headed for the main entrance. We headed out and settled in to a close reach making 4.5-5 knots to the north. About 2 miles out we heaved too for a moment then continued to the north. We tacked and close reached back to the main entrance. As we closed on the entrance we fell off making 1-2 knots on a broad run. We jibed and came up to a close reach again to the north. I spotted the Stanley's coming down the river and tacked back towards the entrance. They came out and as the passed we tacked and followed them to the NNE on a very close reach making 3-3.5 knots. We passed them and continued to the NNE as I set up the asymmetric spinnaker. I dropped and secured the 130 and we fell off to set the asymmetric as the Stanley's caught up and passed us. I raised the asymmetric and we headed to the NNW on a reach. I noticed the jib halyard was wrapped over top of the spin halyard. We fell off so the main blanketed the spinnaker and I pulled the jib halyard around and back under the spin halyard. To jibe I had to help the spinnaker around. We headed to the SSE trying for the east end of the breakwall at about 40 degrees apparent wind and 4 knots. We saw Brigadier sailing to the NE ahead of us. We couldn't sail high enough to make the east end of the wall so we fell off to a broad reach for the main entrance making 3.4-4 knots. We fell off and went wing-in-wing making 3-3.5 knots. We jibed he main back and reached to the main entrance at 4.5-5 knots. We carried the spinnaker right into the river and about 3/4 of the way to the turning basin where we dropped it in a lull. We started the motor, dropped the main and motored to the dock.

Raised main in basin and jib in river. We shut the motor off and sailed down the river making 2-3.5 knots. We sailed out the main entrance and off to the NNW on a close reach making 5.3-5.6 knots. I set the self steering for a bit but was able to make about 0.3 knots better speed by steering myself. About 3 miles out we passed the Stateless on their way in. We tacked and followed them back to the light house. We were barely gaining on them making 5.4-5.7 knots. About 1/4 mile from the entrance Dave Michelson came by on a jet ski. We took some photos and tacked back to the NNW. About 1/2 mile out we hove-to for about 15 minutes. According to the GPS we were drifting to the east at about 1.5 knots. We got under way again and followed the cement boat Lori Ann to the NW. We were making 5.5 knots and keeping up with them but could not gain. About 2 miles out we tacked and headed back to the main entrance. The boat steered itself most of the way. We sailed all the way up the river to the turning basin, dropped the sails and motored into the dock.

1750-2030
Motored down river. Wind was on the nose in the river. I noticed another boat turn to the NW to raise their main in the harbor so I raised mine before the end of the river. We motored out the main entrance and north about 400 yards then raised the jib. We headed to the east in very light wind (2-4 knots) making 1.5-2.5 knots. We were not heeling enough for the self steering rig to work. The wind was coming and going a bit and at one point we were up to 3.3 knots but then it died. Near the east end of the wall we were becalmed for a bit then it filled enough to make 1.5 knots. We tacked and headed west but the wind died again. I started the motor, dropped the jib and headed around the east end of the wall. On the way I tied loops in the tails of the jib sheets and ran them around the backs of the winches. The self steering was rigged and basically centered. I steered the boat by pulling on one sheet or the other to move the tiller. It worked very well. I was able to clear up the gear on the foredeck and make small course corrections without going back to the cockpit. We motored back to the west end of the harbor and out the main entrance after the Stanley's. We circled them and talked for a minute then headed back to the river. I dropped the main on the way up to the dock.

With Connie and Hudson Milner. Raised the main in the turning basin and motor sailed down the river past the freighter Earl Oglebay. Shut the motor down and sailed out the river making 2.5-4 knots almost dead down in the puffy wind. We sailed out the main entrance and off to the WNW on a close reach at about 3 knots. We raised the jib and continued at 5-6 knots. The wind was quite puffy. We tacked and sailed to the east end of the wall on a close reach. I set the self steering but it had trouble in he puffy conditions. We tacked and sailed back to the east. The freighter had come out and was headed off to the NW. Windshadow came out and eased past us as we retraced our path to the WNW. About 2 miles from the light we tacked and headed east. Windshadow also tacked. We were almost able to match their speed but not quite, they were flying their #2. We were slightly underpowered in the lulls but just right in the puffs. On a reaching course (we were close reaching to close hauled) we could have carried the 130. We took a higher course then wind shadow making for the east end of the wall. We sailed inshore a bit then tacked and headed back behind the wall. About 100 yards from the river I dropped the jib and stated the motor. I dropped the main as wee motored up the river to the dock.

With Chuck Duer. Set the main in the basin and the jib as we went down the river. We shut down the motor and sailed down the river at 3-4 knots. We sailed out the main entrance and off to the NW on a close reach at 5.5-6 knots with about 20 degrees of heel. We went out about a mole, tacked and headed to the east end of the wall making 5.8-6 knots. We tacked at the east end and headed back to the NW on a close reach at 5.5-5.9. The wind was picking up and we had to drop the traveler and flatten the sails. We went out about 1/2 mile, tacked and headed to the east end again making 6-6.3 knots on a close reach (about 65 degrees apparent) in the larger waves. We came past the end of the wall and came up to a close hauled course and headed inshore. We were overpowered and had to let the main luff to keep the heel down until we got closer to shore and the lee of the trees. We tacked to go behind the wall but couldn't point high enough so we started the motor and dropped the headsail. We motorsailed across the harbor making two tacks. With the motor we tacked through about 70 degrees. We headed into the river and dropped the main and motored to the dock. This was the first sail with the new cam cleats on the jib traveler. They work great, much better then the jam cleats.

Set the main in the river and motored out passed freighter (?? Clarke) that was coming in. We motored out the main entrance passed a dredge that was working just outside the main entrance. We motored to the north about 1/2 mile and set the asymmetric spinnaker and sailed off to the NE on a reach to close reach. The wind came and went a bit and we made from 1 to 3 knots. About 2 miles out Charlie Engle passed us as he headed in. We jibed and headed back carrying the spinnaker as close as possible just making the course to the entrance. The wind was a bit shifty and occasionally we were lifted a bit. About 1 mile out we came into some better wind and managed 4.3 knots for a bit. At the entrance we fell off and dropped the spinnaker then jibed and headed back for another look at the dredge. We tacked and sailed in the entrance, started the motor and headed up the river dropping the main on the way. We had to move to the left side of the river to get under the freighter boom that was stretched across from the salt dock.

With Laura and Jason Stanley. Almost no wind, just a few light patches. We set the main in the river and motored out the main entrance. We headed to the WNW and set the 150. We shut the motor down and sailed/drifted at 0 to 2 knots out for about 1/2 mile, tacked and headed back. In one decent wind line we got up to almost 3 knots. At the main entrance we dropped the 150 and motored in to the river dropping the main on the way.

Motored down the river and set the main as we passed the salt dock. Motored out main entrance and off to the NW leaving the dredge to starboard. We set the 130 and did a few tacks working towards P26 Obsession which was getting ready to head in. We passed a few hundred yards from them and headed off to the NW on a close reach making 4.5-5.5 knots. We went out about 1 mile, jibed and headed back to the entrance on a close to beam reach. The Stanley's P26OD were ahead to leeward and the other P26OD Compromise was to windward and behind. We were making 4.5-5.5 knots, pulling ahead of Compromise and slowly gaining on the Stanley's. We got the main entrance right behind them and passed them as we came by the lighthouse. We sailed all the way to the salt dock then started the motor and dropped the sails.

Motored down the river and set the main. Motored into harbor, set the 130 and motor sailed out main entrance and off to the NW leaving the dredge to starboard. We were close reaching at 4.5-5.5 knots. We went out about 1 mile. We saw Viking passing on their way in to the west and Redemption (P26) to the east. We tacked when they were about 200 yards past us and headed back to the entrance on a beam reach. We were making 4-5.5 knots slowly gaining on Redemption. We were about 100 feet behind them at the entrance. We sailed up the river halfway to the salt dock then started the motor and dropped the sails.

Took Pat MacAvoy out so he could see how the boat sailed (he is considering purchasing one). Did a u-turn in the river and set the main then turned back towards the lake. In the harbor we went about halfway across, turned back, set the 130 then headed off to the east on a reach at 4-5.5 knots. The wind was pretty puffy. We sailed to the east end of the harbor, beat back to the SW then broad reached out the east end at 3-5.5 knots in the puffy wind. We went to the NNE wing-in-wing for a bit at about 3.5 knots then headed to the west on a close reach at 5.5-6 knots. We passed the main entrance and continued to the west on courses from a close reach to close hauled making 3.5-5.7 knots. About 1 mile from the light we tacked and headed back on a beam reach hitting 6.5 knots in the bigger puffs but usually making a bit under 6. We came around the end of the wall, hardened up to close hauled to sail in the entrance. Blue Heron (Pearson 323) was motoring in (no sails up) and did not give way for us (we were sailing) and we almost had to crash tack right in the middle of the entrance but managed to just luff while they passed. The certainly violated our right of way. Once inside the wall we started the motor and dropped the jib then headed for the river. We dropped the main as we came in the river and motored up to the dock. At the basin we had to hover for a few minutes because Blue Heron was having trouble docking and had to re-do their approach. We circled a few times then headed in to the dock.

Added 4.4 gallons of fuel. Raised main in river and jib in harbor and motor sailed out the main entrance on a close reach then headed off to the NNW on a close reach to close hauled course. A Hunter 25.5 was setting sail just ahead of us after we cleared the entrance. We passed them as we shut the motor down and continued to pull away from them as we headed NW at 4-5 knots. About 1.5 miles out we tacked and headed ESE at 3-4 knots close hauled. We hove to for a few minutes as the Stanley's (P26OD) caught up with us then paced them on a close reach to the east. Boat speed was very comparable. I was able to catch up but barely, and I think my sails are better, the bottom condition is probably about the same with a fair amount of slime. After about 10 minutes we both fell off for the main entrance which was a broad reach of about 150 degrees. I went wing-in-wing making about 1.6-2.2 knots for about 10 minutes then I jibed the main and came up to a broad reach of about 110-120 apparent and made 3-4 knots. This maneuver got me to the entrance about 3 minutes ahead of the Stanley's who stayed on the original broad reach. I think I made about the same speed wing-in-wing as I would have on the broad reach but the advantage came when I turned back for the entrance on the higher course with much better speed. Once inside the wall I dropped the jib. We entered the river under main, stated the motor and motored up the river. We dropped the main in the basin and motored in to the dock.

Raised the main in the river and the 130 after exiting the main harbor entrance and motorsailed making 5.5 knots. There was enough wind to keep the sails fill most of the time but they were not contributing to speed except in puffs that were good for +.4 knots. I dropped the jib about 200 yards from the harbor entrance and motored in with the main. I headed to the dock on the north channel of Mentor Lagoons where Scott Wallace had his Bluenose Sloop Hell Diver tied up. Scott wasn't there yet so I headed back to MHYC to see if I could find Chris Wilson's P30 (he was in form Lorain). He was docked right on the first dock as you come out of the Lagoons channel but no one was on board. I tied up in an empty slip and left him a note. Then I headed back to find Scott waiting at the Bluenose. I spent the afternoon helping him get the mast stepped. The fuel level was at about 4 gallons after arriving at Mentor.

Reefed Main
1915-2040
With Scott and Brian Wallace. Before heading out to Fairport I towed Scott's Bluenose around to the other side of the lagoons to his dock. Then we stopped to talk to Chris Wilson for a few minutes before heading out. We raised the full main before leaving the harbor and motored out. Once on the lake there was a lot more wind and the course to Fairport was close hauled. We headed NW a bit as I put a reef in the main. We tacked and motorsailed east at 5.4-5.6 knots close hauled. The wind and waves were building. I had set up the 130 but there was too much wind for it so I stowed the halyard and secured the130 under the bungi on the foredeck. It was a very wet ride and we got soaked. The water was pretty warm in the low 70s. There was too much for the working jib on the close hauled course. The storm jib might have been OK but it wasn't on board. About half way to Fairport the wind shifted ccw about 20 degrees and we were close reaching at 5.8-6.1 knots. We came up a bit to make a wide turn around the wall at the entrance. About 400 yards from the entrance we fell of to a wide beam reach and caught a few surfs on some 5-6 footers to 7 knots. The motor was running and, from the sound of it, I think it actually slowed us down on those surfs. We came through the entrance on a dead run and I rigged the preventer. We crossed the harbor to the river entrance on a dead run. We were by-the-lee sometimes. We motor sailed up the river, came about in the turning basin and dropped the main then motored to the dock. It would really help to have a winch on the main halyard for reefing.

Motored down the river to see what the lake was like and raised the main in the harbor. We shut the motor down sailed to the east on a close reach making 2-2.4 knots. We saw Jason Stanley on his windsurfer. We tacked back and forth for a while then putty up the working jib. Speed on a close reach went from 1.8-2.2 to 4.5-5 knots. We tacked and went back and forth a bit more then headed to the west end of the harbor. We spotted Wildthing stuck on the bottom near the west end of the sand bar. A Hunter 25 (number 32 on sail) came and tried to tow them off. We watched from the west while hove to and they managed to get free by putting everyone on the low side to heel the boat. We then headed to the river and sailed up as far as the salt dock on a broad run then motored when we dropped to about 2 knots. We dropped the jib after starting the motor and turned back into the wind in the turning basin to drop the main then motored to the dock. Fuel was down to a bit lower then 1/2.

1830-2050
With Scott Wallace. Set the main and 130 near the end of the river and motor sailed out the main entrance. We headed off to the nort making 3-4 knots on a very close reach. I set the self steering which worked very well. The wind filled enough for us to make 4.5 knots for a bit. About 2 miles out we tacked and headed back towards the main entrance on a beam reach then came up to close hauled and headed to the east entrance. I set up the gear to fly the asymmetric spinnaker. As we aproached the east entrance the wind died away and speed was down to less then 2 knots. By the time we set the asym the wind was almost gone and had shifted to the SW. We dropped te spinnaker, secured lines and motored across the harbor dropping the main on the way to the river entrance.

First sail with 170 flying on new luff tape. Raised the main in the river and the 170 in the harbor and headed east behind the wall on a wide beam reach. We were making 5.2-5.6 knots in about 7-9 knots of wind (as read by the ball-in-tube windmeter) with 10-15 degrees of heel. After clearing the end of the wal we came up to a close reach making 5.5-6 knots. The sail felt very powerful. Apparant wind was up to about 12 knots. About 1 mile out we tacked and headed west. We made 4.3-4.7 knots close hauled. We fell off a bit for a flatter ride since we would need to tack anyway. At about even with the first marker light from the east end of the wall we tacked and headed N on a course of about 10-20 degrees. We went out about 1 mile then tacked for the main entrance. It was on a reach but we were slowly getting headed and the wind was slowing. I came up to close hauled then fell off when I got close. We sailed in the main entrance, sailed across the harbor and into the river where we lost the wind (now from the WNW). I started the motor as we entered the river and dropped the 170. I dropped the jib after the CG station. There was a lot of activity at the station, there had been a jet ski accident at about 1700.

Reefed main
1700-1900
With Rob Hodge and Jason Stanley. We set the reefed main in the river. I have the cleat for the main reefing on the mast but I realized today that it needs to be on the boom. All of the reefing gear needs to be on the bom so it can be set and the boom can slide freely up and down so the downhaul can be used to tension the luff without affecting the reef tension. I will have a gromet pit in to replace the reefing ring (or perhaps in addition to it) so the reef line can lead through to the starboard side. We motored out the river entrance and across the harbor then tacked and shut the motor down. We sailed close hauled making 3-4 knots with 10-15 degrees of heel. We beat to the east end of the wall in 6 tacks. Waves got bigger as we cvame to the east. I had the working jib lashed down on the foredeck and had to re-secure it at one point. At the east end we spotted two power boats comming along behind us. They were 22-25 foot Bayliner type boats and they were only making about 5 knots in the big waves. Maybe they had been in Cleveland at the air show and were on there way east to Ashtabula or Geneva and ducked in behind the breakwall for the 1 mile in more protected water. We headed north close hauled at about 4 knots then fell off to a close reach and made 4.5-5 knots. We took that out past the GRSC F mark then fell of to a run for the entrance. There was not enough power in the reefed main to catch any surfs. As we got closer we came up a bit and reached across the entrance so we could jibe and sail through on a wide beam reach. There were some very large waves as we approached the entrance, perhaps 6-7 feet. Just inside the entrance we caught a few surfs from 4.5 to almost 6 knots. We sailed all the way up the river, dropped the main in the basin after shaking out the reef, and motored to the dock. Overall the boat felt pretty slow working through the waves with the reefed main. I think the storm jib would have helped a lot.

1830-2030
Singlehanding.Raised the main and working jib in the river and motor sailed out the main entrance and off to the NE a bit. I shut the motor down and sailed on a close reach making 4-5 knots. The waves were still big from a windy afternoon. I hove to from starboard tack to do a headsail change to the 130. The boat was very stable and I imobilized the tiller with my self steering unit run out all the way to starboard. That put the tiller about 8" from center. The wj was in the port groove of the tuff luff.I took the 130 on deck and secured the tack. I shifted the lazy sheet from the wj to the 130 and raised the 130 in the starboard groove. I secured the sheet for the 130 and released the sheet for the wj and got under way on port tack. I trimed the sails to balance the boat with the self-steering set and went forward to bring the wj down inside the 130. Then I moved the other sheet to the 130. The entire process took about 7 minutes and worked perfectly. Control was excellent and thr boat was very stable hove to. It would be more of a challange with more wind and waves. After the headsail change I tacked and chased Autonomy (Nautical 33) to take a photo. I caught up with them quickly and fell off to get on the sunny side. Then I came up on a close reach and passed ahead of them. They were quite a bit slower then I was. I headed east for another 1/8 mile then tacked and reached back to the main entrance. I sailed in then tacked and sailed back out. I headed east for about 1/8 mile then jibed and headed back in since the wind was dying. Inside the harbor I hove to again and dropped the jib. Without the jib the boat tacked but there was hardly any wind. I started the motor, dropped the main and headed up the river.

Raised main and 130 in river and motor sailed out the main entrance with Whitehawk. Shut the motor down and sailed off to the NNW on a close reach making 3.5-4 knots. Whitehawk was probably making 5 knots and left us behind. I set the self steering and a tweaker line to make corrections from the foredeck and went and sat forward. Whitehawk tacked and came past us on there way back inshore. About 2 miles out we tacked and headed in on a close reach. The wind was dying and we were making a bit under 3 as we approached the entrance. We started the motor droped the 130 and motor sailed in the entrance. We dropped the main as we crossed the harbor and motored up the river.

Motored down river setting main on the way. We motored out the main entrance and off to the ENE towards GRSC race mark F. There was very little wind. I shout the motor down, set the self steering and let the boat drift. We maintained the same heading and were moving at a speed to slow for the knotmeter to show. After about 20 minutes the wind filled in and I raised the 130. We made 2-2.5 knots close reaching. After about 20 minutes we tacked and headed bact towards the main entrance on a broad reach. The wind died back again and we started the motor and dropped the 130. We motored in the main entrance and into the river, dropped the main and motored back to the dock. For the forst 15-20 minutes the knotmeter did not function, then it seemed to clear up.

Raised the main in the turning basin and shut the motor down. We sailed doewn the river on a dead run with the main to starboard on the preventer making 2-3 knots. I set the 130 about half way down the river and sailed out the river and out the main entrance wing-in-wing making 3.5-4 knots. Once clear of the entrance I jibed the main and headed east on a close reach and chased Eagle, a Catalina 30 flying their full main and a partially rolled headsail. We made 4.5-5.5 knots acording to the knotmeter but the GPS seemed to read in the 6-6.3 range. From the looks of the wake the boat seemed to be near hull speed so perhaps the knotmeter is a but gunky. We were maintaining our distance from Eagle and in the puffs we were gaining on them. The wind was quite puffy and whern it was up we were on the edge of being overpowered with the 130. About 1/2 mile past the east end of the wall Eagle tacked back to the west. After they passed we did the same but took a lower course as the 130 was a bit too big to hold the same. They pulled away from us but we were also on a divergant course. We sailed off to the west of the main entrance by about 1/2 mile then tacked and headed east again. We sailed past the wast end of the wall and inshore then tacked and headed back to the river entrance behind the wall. About 1/4 mile fro mthe river I luffed into the wind and dropped the jib. I started the motor and headed for the river. I tacked into the river and was head to wind. I dropped the main as we passed the coast guard staton and we motored up to the dock.

Raised the main in the turning basin and motor sailed down the river. We set the jib as we crossed the harbor to the main entrance, shut the motor off and headed off to the NW on a close reach at 3.7-4 knots. I pulled the mainsheet out on the other end and ran it to the cabin top winch so I could adjuist the trim from the cabin top with the self steering set. It worked very well. I was able to use mainsail trim to ake small course adjustments. We headed out about 1.5 miles and tacked back to the entrance on a beam reach at about 4 knots. There was more wind close in and we sailed to the east end of the harbor inside the wall at 4.5 knots on a broad reach. We came up to a close hauled course to the south then tacked back to the west side of the harbor and tacked to head into the river. We sailed about 1/5 of the way up the river then started the motor and dropped the jib. We motoredf to the basin dropped the main and motored to the dock.

With Jason Stanley. Annual Road Kill Ragatta. Race was from Fairport entrance to Mentor C mark and back, about 8 miles. We prepped the boat and motored over to Harbor 220 for the 0930 skippers meeting. We left Harbor 220 at 0950 and headed out to the lake for the 1030 start. We set the main in the river and motored out to the lake to pick a headsail. We started with the 130 but right after the start I decided that was a mistake and changed to the 170. We were making about 3 knots but the wind was diminishing. With the small sail to start and the change over we were quickly at the back of the pack. The bottom haden't been cleaned all season and that probably helped slow us down as well. We made 4 long tacks to the mark. The first boat to finish was Wish (J/105) with an elapsed time of 2:36. We hadn't even gotten to the turning mark yet. Had we bailed out then we could have gotten back 2 hours earlier, but we went on and rounded the mark and set the asymmetric spinnaker. We made about 2 knots on the broad reach back. About 1/2 mile from the light the wind died away and we dropped the sail and motored in.

Raised main in river just below the basin and the 170 near the coast guard station. Shut the motor down as we crossed the harbor and sailed out the entrance on a reach. Just outside we made an S turn maneuver to leward to duck the Cleveland Marine Towing boat and the tow they were pulling out the main entrance. We then headed off to the NNW on a close reach at about 2 knots in very light air. Journey came along past us and we took some photos of each other. They were close enough to use the 28mm lens. We went out about 1 mile and tacked to head in. The course was higher and we were close hauled making 2.5-2.9 knots until we were about 1/8 mile from the entrance and the wind backed down a bit and we were headed and couldn't make the entrance. We started the motor and dropped the 170 and motored in the main erntrance. We dropped the main as we crossed the harbor and headed up the river. There was a TV news crew taping at the CG station and they filmed us going by.

reefed main, WJ
1030-1230
With Scott Wallace. We raised the reefed main in the river. It is difficult to set the reefed main because the reefing line puts tension on the sal slugs and makes them bind in the track. You need to have the reefing line and the outhaul slacked a bit to raise the main and boom high enough to get good tension on the downhaul. I think having a fixed gooseneck and a winch for the main would be better then the sliding gooseneck and downhaul. We motor sailed into the harbor and headed off to the east then tacked towards the main entrance. I set the jib and we motor sailed out the main entrance. The entrance had very large confused waves in it and the motor came out of the water on one of them. Once we were through the entrance the waves settled a bit and were more organized. Waves were about 4 feet with the ocasional 5 footer. We headed off to the NW on a close reach making 5-5.5 knots with the waves about 65 degrees off the bow. It was a decent ride without slamming or waves comming over the bow. About 1 mile out we tacked but the bowline on the jib came loose. We had lost a lot of speed in the tack and we came around and jibed then came back up to a close reach and I re-tied the sheet and threaded it. We tacked and headed back to the main entrance on a reach making 5.5-6 knots. The wind had a slight oscilation in it and was building up from 20-25 to 25-30 every 4 minutes or so fo about 1 minute. We sailed through the entrance and got tossed about a bit by the confused waves and caught a couple of small surfs. Had we turned further off the wind and waves out on the lake we probably would have caught a lot of surfs. We sailed across the harbor on a broad run. The main wouldn't run out and I noticed the topping lift had snagged on the backstay because it had come loose from the cleat that I hade also tied the reef line to. I sheeted the main in and cleared the topping lift from the backstay. We sailed all the way up the river and dropped the jib just before the turning basin. We started the motor and sailed across the basin, came about and dropped the main and motored to the dock.

Last ride of the 2000 season. The main was up at the dock for testing the reefing lines so I slacked it and backed out with it up and headed down the river. We motored out into the harbor and set the jib and reached off to the east making 3.5-4 knots. We tacked and headed back and hove to for a bit and drifted ESE very slowly. After 20 minutes or so we jibed and headed to the river. Journey was comming out so we hove to again near the main entrance so we could get some photos. They came out and headed east behind the wall and we followed. I couldn't catch up but I managed to keep from falling behind making 3.5-4.3 knots on a reach to close reach. At the east wnd of the wall we jibed and headed for the river on a close reach making 5 knots in the puffs and 3.5 in the lulls. We fell off at the river mouth and started the motor. We dropped the jib just past the CG station and motored to the turning basin. We came about and dropped the main and motored back to the slip to de-rig for unstepping the mast.
