All of these Hale-Bopp photos were shot with a Pentax K-1000 using Kodak Royal Gold 1000 film, Fuji Super G 400 ASA or Fuji Super G 800 ASA. I got the best results with exposures from 1 to 2 minutes. Longer exposures didn't bring out more details in the comet and tended to over-expose the foreground and sky and create longer star trails. With the color film I have gotten the most favorable results in the earlier part of the evening between 1 and 2 hours after sunset. Later then that the sky looses it's blue hue and looks dark grey and grainy on the film. I would expect it's nice and black further from the big city lights.

Another early evening shot over our house in Euclid, OH. The long streaks in the sky are from UFO exhaust (or possibly airplane contrails).

Hale-Bopp over a turbulent Lake Erie. The wind was blowing about 30 knots and the waves were 6 to 8 feet. I found a spot that was shielded from the wind to set up my cameras.

On the horizon you can see lights from the opposite shore of lake Erie. The lake is about 50 miles across here. The lights are visible due to an inversion over the lake. There is cool air at the surface with a warm layer above. This inversion layer acts as a reflector making it possible to see the opposite shore.
