March 31, 1997 - 2040 EST 28mm, f3.5, 40 seconds, Kodak Royal Gold 1000. Hale-Bopp over a turbulent Lake Erie. The wind was blowing about 30 knots and the waves were 6 to 8 feet. I found a spot that was shielded from the wind to set up my cameras. |

April 1, 1997 - 2030 EST 50mm, f2, about 90 seconds, Fuji Super G 400. On the horizon you can see lights from the opposite shore of lake Erie. The lake is about 50 miles across here. The lights are visible due to an inversion over the lake. There is cool air at the surface with a warm layer above. This inversion layer acts as a reflector making it possible to see the opposite shore. |
